The Power of Fasting and Prayer: What Every Woman Needs to Know

A woman looking into a mirror.

Fasting and prayer have been powerful spiritual disciplines since biblical times. When we look at stories like Esther, Daniel, and even Jesus Himself, we see that fasting wasn’t an option, it was a necessity. It was the key to hearing God’s voice, receiving direction, and experiencing breakthroughs.

But for many of us, fasting feels intimidating. Maybe you’ve tried before and struggled to stay consistent. Maybe you’re not sure how to fast or why it even matters. But, fasting isn't just going without food; it’s centered around making room for God.

When I truly committed to fasting and prayer, I had reached a season in my life where I felt confused in my faith. It was like I was circling the same mountain over and over. No matter how much I prayed, I didn't truly believe I was getting the breakthrough I desperately needed.

One day, I felt God nudging me to look at fasting from a different perspective.

I was hesitant at first. Fasting meant giving up food, and I wasn’t sure I could do it. But I needed (and wanted) to hear from God. So, I set aside time to fast, pray, and seek Him with my whole heart. And something changed. Not only did I feel spiritually stronger, but God began revealing things to me that I had been too distracted to hear before.

That’s the power of fasting and prayer. It’s not just skipping meals, it's intentionally seeking God, silencing distractions, and positioning yourself for breakthroughs.

When Fasting Changed a Nation

When Esther stood at the crossroads of fear and faith, facing the possible destruction of her people, she didn’t rely on her own strength. She turned to fasting and prayer.

“Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.” Esther 4:16

Before Esther approached the king, she sought the King of Kings first.

Fasting and prayer have always been powerful spiritual tools, not just for biblical heroes, but for every woman who wants to draw closer to God, hear His voice, and see breakthroughs in her life.

But what exactly is fasting? How does it work? And why does it matter in your spiritual walk? Today, I’m going to walk you through the power of fasting and prayer—what it is, why it’s important, and how you can apply it to your life. So, grab your notebook, settle in, and let’s walk through what you need to know.

What is Fasting? (A Biblical Definition)

Fasting is the intentional practice of abstaining from food (or other things) for a spiritual purpose.

It’s not about dieting. It’s not about punishing yourself. And it’s definitely not about “earning” favor with God. It’s a practice of setting aside distractions to focus on Him.

“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do… But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:16-18

Jesus didn’t say “if” you fast. He said, “when.” That means fasting is supposed to be a normal part of our spiritual walk.

Biblical Reasons for Fasting

  1. Fasting Draws You Closer to God

“Come near to God and he will come near to you.” James 4:8

When you fast, you silence distractions and make room for God’s presence in a deeper way.

  1. Fasting Strengthens Your Spirit Over Your Flesh

“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” Galatians 5:16

Fasting helps you break free from spiritual stagnation and align your heart with God’s will.

  1. Fasting Brings Breakthrough in Prayer

So He said to them, this kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.” Mark 9:29

Some battles are only won when prayer and fasting work together.

  1. Fasting Positions You for God’s Direction

“While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’” Acts 13:2

If you need clarity, wisdom, or a new direction, fasting can align you with God’s voice.

There are Different Types of Fasting

  • Complete Fast – Abstaining from all food and only drinking water or liquids.

  • Partial Fast – Giving up specific foods (like the Daniel fast, Daniel 10:3).

  • Intermittent Fast – Fasting for a set number of hours each day.

  • Social media/Entertainment Fast – Fasting from distractions that take time away from God.

How To Start Fasting and Prayer

Step 1: Set Your Purpose

Why are you fasting? Are you believing for spiritual growth, breakthrough, healing, or direction? Write it down and commit it to God.

Step 2: Choose a Fasting Type

Decide what you will fast from (food, social media, etc.). Make it a sacrifice that draws you closer to God.

Step 3: Replace Eating Time with Prayer & Scripture

Fasting without prayer is just skipping meals. Use that time to pray, worship, and meditate on Scripture.

Step 4: Listen for God’s Voice

Be intentional about quiet time with God. Write down anything He reveals during your fast.

Step 5: End with Thanksgiving

After your fast, thank God for what He has done. Continue to walk in the spiritual discipline you’ve built.

What Happens When You Fast and Pray?

  • When you fast, you may feel physically weak, but spiritually strong (if you have medical concerns always consult with your doctor before any type of fasting).

  • Temptations may arise, but God will sustain you.

  • You may experience greater clarity, peace, and spiritual breakthroughs.

  • The enemy may try to distract or discourage you but stay focused!

Remember what Isaiah 58:6 says: “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?”

Fasting breaks chains and shifts atmospheres in the spiritual realm.

Biblical fasting is more than just going without food. It's about seeking God with your whole heart. Whether you are believing for a breakthrough, seeking deeper intimacy with God, or interceding for your family or a situation, know that fasting and prayer are powerful spiritual weapons.

If you’ve never fasted before, start small—but start. God will honor your sacrifice and draw you closer than ever before.

Blessings on your fasting journey,
